Pathology-Centered Framework era
In the pathology-centered framework era (1951–1995), Paul A. Katzenstein and colleagues defined the idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis spectrum by establishing the usual interstitial pneumonia pattern as the histologic cornerstone and linking it to clinical prognosis. Their clinicopathologic analyses, often with Jeffrey L. Myers, clarified features such as patchy fibrosis with temporal heterogeneity and prominent fibroblastic foci, enabling standardized histologic scoring. J. Behr and collaborators contributed to standardized histologic criteria and emphasized extracellular matrix remodeling and collagen deposition as central mechanisms shaping fibrogenic biology. Together these contributions anchored clinico-radiologic-histologic correlation for diagnosis and prognosis and fostered cross-institutional comparability in this era.
